It's a little hard to tell in this picture but this couple, Anya Louisa and Dan Tarcy, is dressed as two "rocket men" launched into space in a red Tesla. A group of eagles take flight on Howard Street. If you don't have a six pack, why not draw one on? Sunday, May 20,
Bay to Breakers best photos, moments through the years
Crazy costumes are as much a part of the Bay to Breakers tradition as the actual running. You could call the San Francisco-based event the perfect mix of athleticism and exhibitionism. Blended together, the two isms make for a pretty good time—or so it seems. The Bay to Breakers race took place on Sunday, and the winner on the women's side of the 12K race was the lovely Diane Nukuri Johnson for her second straight victory in the event. Perhaps the man in the horse's head was inspired by California Chrome's recent success at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Cats and dogs can obviously live in harmony. Or maybe they just run together.

Thousands of runners took off at the starting line near the Embarcadero, made their way through Hayes Valley, the Panhandle and Golden Gate Park, and all the way to Ocean Beach. Along the way we spotted many red and white striped "Where's Waldos," a few Stephen Curry lookalikes, at least one inflatable Tyrannosaurus rex, and yes, the usual handful of naked runners. Others got even more creative with their costumes, paying tribute to popular shows like "The Handmaid's Tale" or to local favorite eateries like Bob's Donuts and Boba Guys.
Fingers crossed and costumes donned, thousands of Bay to Breakers participants boldly chose to brave the elements Sunday. Luckily for them, the skies cleared just in time for the th annual kilometer race. Runners splashed through puddles. Tortillas were tossed. Salmon swam upstream. And, of course, birthday suits were bared. Along the way, we encountered a cacophony of sights, sounds, and wide-ranging pop culture references. An Elizabeth Holmes lookalike touted a thermos filled with fake blood as her band of Theranos staffers followed her through Alamo Square.
