Michelle Lot: ‘I can’t find a spot that the government tells me I’m not trespassing on’
The Wounded Knee Massacre , also called the Battle of Wounded Knee , was a domestic massacre of several hundred Lakota Indians, almost half of whom were women and children, by soldiers of the United States Army. The previous day, a detachment of the U. Forsyth , arrived and surrounded the encampment.
It also intentionally placed Indian orphans into the homes of white families. Those policies had devastating effects. Relocated tribal members became isolated from their communities. Low paying jobs and higher expenses, combined with the inability to return to reservations which had often been dissolved, left many in precarious circumstances. In the case of my dad, this translated to growing up on the rough streets of Richmond, CA, and spending much of his life burying his trauma at the bottom of a bottle. He was orphaned twice; first when my Native grandmother died in our tribal territory, then when his adopted white mother passed when he was Dad never knew who his birth father was, and his adopted father was also an alcoholic who died not many years after his wife. As a result, my father was barely a physical presence in my life, let alone an economic one. He was terrible with money: if he had it, he spent it. Indigenous people are not supposed to have money.
Like it was mentioned above, see how she deals some of the issues now and if she can't handle it, it might be better to find someone else. I am very active with my work, social life, and activities and independent. These are nice people. But we only really get time together in the summer.
