Many of my top 10 lists are patently absurd in the sense of having to narrow down to 10 of something. The rhythm section swings hard yet elegantly, Coltrane and Cannonball burn in very different ways, and few composers have ever penned a melody as lyrical and coherent as the solo that Miles improvises here. Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams were only just beginning the exploration that would revolutionize aspects of jazz rhythm and interplay. This group could easily get its own Top list and choosing only 10 would still be agonizing. Hard bop? This modified blues tune became a standard part of the jazz repertoire, and this recording is a great early representation of the soon-to-be major bandleaders Sonny Rollins who composed the tune and Horace Silver, whose piano playing oozes blues on this performance. Herbie Hancock became plenty well-known for using electric instruments, but Ron Carter on bass guitar? History aside, the classic s quintet, in its recorded swan song, rocks out big-time here, yet without losing the essence of its approach. Your email address will not be published. Skip to content.

Between his first recording session in and his death in , Miles Davis changed the course of music many times. The first of these came with the short-lived lineups he assembled for a New York residency and three studio sessions between January and March The nine-piece lineup was unusual — few jazz bands used a French horn — and the gigs attracted little attention.

He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music. Davis adopted a variety of musical directions in a five-decade career that kept him at the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz. Born in Alton, Illinois , and raised in East St. Louis , Davis left to study at the Juilliard School in New York City , before dropping out and making his professional debut as a member of saxophonist Charlie Parker 's bebop quintet from to Shortly after, he recorded the Birth of the Cool sessions for Capitol Records , which were instrumental to the development of cool jazz. In the early s, Miles Davis recorded some of the earliest hard bop music while on Prestige Records but did so haphazardly due to a heroin addiction. After a widely acclaimed comeback performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in , he signed a long-term contract with Columbia Records and recorded the album 'Round About Midnight. During this period, he alternated between orchestral jazz collaborations with arranger Gil Evans , such as the Spanish music-influenced Sketches of Spain , and band recordings, such as Milestones and Kind of Blue P and Miles Smiles , before transitioning into his electric period. During the s, he experimented with rock, funk, African rhythms , emerging electronic music technology , and an ever-changing line-up of musicians, including keyboardist Joe Zawinul , drummer Al Foster , and guitarist John McLaughlin.
And Miles really opened up so many doors for me and introduced me to so many other incredible musicians. His use of space is inspirational: there are plenty of musicians who can play faster than Miles and play more notes, but he could say more with less, and sound more powerful. As a heavy metal guitarist playing fast is part of what you do, but Miles certainly had an impact on me in terms of trying to say more with less. If you only ever own one jazz album, you should own Kind Of Blue. This version is all about intense energy, it almost reminds me of someone interpreting early Black Sabbath but on trumpet and Fender Rhodes, with the chops of these incredible musicians, such as Chick Corea and the British bass player Dave Holland, at the top of their game. The Bitches Brew album is extraordinary, an absolute classic, and it introduced the brilliant guitarist John McLaughlin to the world. The opening track, The Intro , is just amazing, and it was actually one of my introductions to John McLaughlin. You can really heard his funk influence here, it has a very funky bassline, a great slap-funk pattern played by Darryl Jones, who now plays with the Rolling Stones. These are patterns I use in improvisations to this day. The version of it that I like the most is on an album called We Want Miles , a live recording, and it has Mike Stern on guitar, another great influence on me.
